On March 15, the Georgia Association of REALTORS® issued a statewide Call For Action this in opposition to HB 1048 and SB 417, which would mandate a termite inspection prior to transfer single-family residential property in Georgia. A previous version of the bill would have applied to both residential and commercial property.
Days earlier, the House Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee approved HB 1048 with an amendment that would require buyers to sign a waiver if they declined to obtain a termite inspection. In response, GAR's State and Local Government committee activated the grassroots network. REALTORS® have generated over 3,000 emails to members of the General Assembly with a clear message that GAR will fight to protect free market principles.
Just 24 hours after the Call for Action was launched, the Senate Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee voted to defeat the bill. HB 1048 is still active, but is being held in the House Rules Committee. GAR lobbyists will continue to monitor the bill, although it has many hurdles to clear in both the House and Senate in order to become law.
